Families I am researching - alphabetical listing

The purpose of this list is to give a basic outline of each my ancestral families, so that other researchers can quickly determine whether or not our research interests overlap, and see where my information runs out. At present, the BALDWIN and WILSFORD family are the only ones for which I have included any documentation. As I find the time to change what data I have to html format, the documentation for more families will be included.

Each family starts with the earliest generation for which I have proof, and proceeds one generation at a time until reaching a woman who marries into another family. An asterisk (*) indicates that more information will be found under the appropriate family heading. For the most part, I have limited these outlines to that information which can be solidly documented in primary sources, but there is one main exception to this. To date, I have not done a large amount of research on my New England lines, and much of the information given here on those lines is based on good secondary sources which I have not yet checked in the primary sources. With this exception (and a couple of others clearly noted), the remaining lines given here are based on primary sources or (when the primary source was unavailable to me) on copies or abstracts of primary sources. On a few occasions, where I had strong evidence for a relationship which fell short of outright proof, I have included the information as "probable", always clearly marked as such. In these outlines, "probable" always means more than just "written down somewhere", and I do not make such a claim without significant supporting evidence. If there is one or more of these "weak links" in the line between the indicated individuals and myself, the data is italicised. Direct ancestors are given in bold face. Individuals familiar with these families will sometimes note that I have sometimes excluded data (often several generations) which appears in other accounts of those families. The reason for this will generally be that I am not satisfied with the evidence, and reasons for excluding the information will generally be given in the notes. Of course, typographical errors or other mistakes are always a possibility, and I would appreciate being informed of any errors.

AGNEW (probable connection [1])

Patrick Agnew, of Kilwaughter, co. Antrim, gent., will dated 1 July 1724, proved 9 July 1725, m. Martha Houston*.

Margaret Agnew, m. James Crawford*.

Note: [1] The information given here is all well documented. The family is listed here as a "probable" connection because of a weak link (one generation later) between these individuals and myself.

BAIRD (2)

Adam Baird, of Lancaster and Abbeville counties, SC, d. 1807, Abbeville co., SC.

John Baird, d. ca. 1798, Abbeville co., SC, m. 1st, _____ Moore? [1], m. 2nd, Martha _____.

Lilias Baird, b. 12 Feb 1784, SC, d. 22 July 1852, bur. Fairhaven cem., Preble co., OH, m. 1807, SC, Reuben Cooper Weed(e)*.

Note: [1] Her name has been given as "Lilias McClurken" by some, but with no supporting evidence, and there is an early tradition that her maiden name was Moore, which seems to have more support. Since three of her grandchildren were named "Nancy M.", with "M." standing for Moore in at least one of those cases, it is reasonable to conjecture that her name was Nancy Moore.

BALDWIN

John Baldwin, of Howgill, in the twonship of Rimington and parish of Gisburn, co. York, later of Wheatley, in Pendle Forest, co. Lancaster, England, d. 22 12mo. [Feb] 1718/9, Marsden MM, co. Lancaster, England, m. Bridget _____, who was living 7 1mo. [Mar] 1713/4. [1]

John Baldwin, of Wheatley, in Pendle Forest, co. Lancaster, England, later of Makefield, Bucks co., PA, came to America between 1698 and 1700 (probably 1699), d. 19 1mo. Stewart Leslie Baldwin (the author of this webpage)

Notes: [1] This first generation is almost certain, but direct proof is lacking. [2] This death was recorded in the records of the New Garden Monthly Meeting in North Carolina, along with other notices of the family of William Baldwin, son of John, and it is clear that the record was made after the event. The death of John's wife Ann in 1741 (well before the move to NC) was also recorded in the same records, and it is clear that she never went to North Carolina. Thus, there is no good evidence that John Baldwin ever went to North Carolina.

BEALS

John Beals [1], d. 1726, Chester co., PA, m. 1682, Chester MM, PA Mary Clayton*.

John Beals, b. 28 1mo [Mar] 1685, Chester MM, PA, d. 1745, Prince George's co., MD, m. 14 9mo. [Nov] 1711, Chester MM, PA, Sarah Bowater*.

Prudence Beals, d. 25 6mo. [June] 1815, New Garden MM, m. 11 10mo. [Dec] 1746, Fairfax MM, VA, Richard Williams*.

Note: [1] I have seen his father's name given as either Thomas or William, but never supported by any reasonable evidence.

BEAMON

George Beamon, of Derby, CT, m. Aug 1679, Derby, New Haven co., CT, Mary Jackson*.

Mary Beamon, d. 27 Oct 1743, Derby, New Haven co., CT, m. 17 Dec 1702, Derby, CT, John Weed*.

BEVERLEY

Arthur Beverley [1], of Bickley, co. York, bur. 26 Feb 1681/2, Ebberston, co. York, m. Mary _____.

Isabella Beverley, bur. 20 Dec 1715, Ebberston, m. 25 June 1695, Ebberston, Edward Consitt*.

Note: [1] Arthur Beverley was a brother of Elizabeth (Beverley) Consitt, the mother of Edward Consitt (see CONSITT), but the identity of their father is unknown. It is quite likely that they descended from the Beverly family of the nearby parish of Rillington.

BOND

Thomas Bond [1], of Wedicar Hall, co. Lancaster, England, d. 16 Oct 1683, Lancaster MM, England, m. 22 May 1656, Lancaster MM, Anne Parker*.

Jane Bond, b. 21 June 1664, Lancaster MM, England, still alive 1707, PA, m. 1st 26 8mo. [Oct] 1687, Lancaster MM, John Scott*, m. 2nd, John Whitaker.

Note: [1] He may have been the son of the John Bond, of Chipping, co. Lancaster, England, whose will was dated 28 May 1662, but this remains unproven.

BOSTOCK (1)

Henry Bostock, of Bostock, co. Chester, England, d. 7 Sep 1580, m. Margaret Bostock*.

Anne Bostock, bp. 13 Oct 1572, Davenham, co. Chester, England, m. 1st , 18 June 1593, Davenham, George Simcock*, m. 2nd, 8 Dec 1624, Witton, John Blease.

Note: [1] Henry Bostock does not appear in the visitations of Cheshire. Burke's Landed Gentry supplies an ancestry for him which, if correct, would probably provide a royal descent. However, there are reasons for being suspicious about this information which go above and beyond the usual reasons for mistrusting the notoriously unreliable Burke, and further evidence is needed for Henry's parentage.

BOSTOCK (2)

Robert Bostock [1], of Moulton, in the parish of Davenham, co. Chester, England, will dated 31 Mar 1537, m. Ann Salt or Salter

Ralph Bostock, of Moulton, bur. 8 Feb 1594/5, Davenham, m. Emma Rode or Roode, who was bur. 30 Aug 1588 at Davenham..

Margaret Bostock, m. 1st, Henry Bostock*, m. 2nd, 10 Jan 1586/7, Witton, Robert Ryley of Leftwich.

Note: [1] Much of this information comes from the 1580 and 1616 visitations of Cheshire, both of which add quite a few earlier generations, but with one major disagreement, the 1616 version giving one extra generation three generations prior to the above Robert. Back to Robert, the visitation gives good information on collaterals, and is probably reliable, as the probate record of Robert reveals that his wife's name was indeed Ann(e). Prior to that, none of the information of the visitation has been verified in contemporary records.

BOTTOM

John Bottom, b. ca. 1662, d. 1710/11, Henrico co., VA, m. Elizabeth _____.

Thomas Bottom, d. 1765, Amelia co., VA.

Mary(?) Bottom [1], m. George Stegall*.

Note: [1] It is known from a deed that Thomas Bottom was the maternal grandfather of George Stegall's daughter Mary Magdalene (Stegall) Rives (see STEGALL), but there is no direct proof that Mary Magdalene (Stegall) Rives was the daughter of George Stegall's known wife Mary. The possibility remains that George Stegall was married twice, first to _____ Bottom (daughter of Thomas Bottom, and mother of Mary Magdalene Stegall) and then to Mary _____.

BOWATER [1]

John Boeter/Bowater, of the parish of Bromsgrove, co. Worcester, England, living 1640.

Worcester, England, came to Pennsylvania in 1683 aboard the ship Bristol Comfort as an indentured servant, date of death unknown, m. 1st, 1686, Chester MM, PA, Sarah Edge*. He m. 2nd, 1702, Concord MM, PA, Mrs. Frances (Lambe) Barnett/Barnard, a widow (an ancestor of Abraham Lincoln by her first marriage), by whom he had no children.

Sarah Bowater, b. 17 6mo. [Aug] 1688, Chester MM, PA, m. 1st, 14 9mo. [Nov] 1711, Chester MM, PA, John Beals* (d. 1745), m. 2nd, 1748, Fairfax MM, VA, Alexander Underwood.

Note: [1] A detailed account of this family, with full documentation, appears in my article "John1 and Thomas1 Bowater and their sister Mary1 (Bowater) Wright", in The American Genealogist 75 (2000): 37-46, 117-123.

BRACE

William Brace, probably lived in the mid-fifteenth century. [1]

Rose Brace, m. John More*.

Note: [1] His arms (as quartered by the Wythe family) indicate that he was a cadet member of the Brace family which held a moiety of the manor of Doverdale in co. Worcester, England, but the exact line of descent from that family has not been established. (See the 1569 visitation of Worcestershire, under the Withe family.)

William Clayton, bp. 9 Dec 1632, Boxgrove, came to PA in 1677, d. 1689, m. 7 Nov 1653, St. Pancras, co. Sussex, Prudence Lanckford*.

Mary Clayton, b. 29 Aug 1665, Rumbolds Wake parish, co. Sussex (rec. at Lewes and Chichester MM), m. 1682, Chester MM, PA, John Beals*.

Note: [1] The name of William's father has been given as Thomas Clayton of Rudgwick, co. Sussex (see The Quaker Yeoman, vol. 11, no. 4, p. 1, Jan 1995), but no proof has been given that Thomas's son William was the same person as this William Clayton. Although proof is lacking, a more likely candidate for the father of William Clayton would be the William Clayton Sr., who was buried 8 Apr 1644 at Boxgrove, co. Sussex. For a well documented account of the English ancestry of this family, see "The Parentage of William Clayton, Quaker immigrant to Pennsylvania: a correction", by Col. Charles Hansen, in The Genealogist [TG], 4 (1983), 169-173, and his later "William Clayton's parentage: an addition", in TG 9 (1988), 78-9.

CONSITT

Thomas Consitt, of Bickley, co. York, England, d. ca. 1657, m. 22 June 1613, Hackness, co. York, Elizabeth Cockerill.

Thomas Consitt, of Bickley, bp. 18 Nov 1627, Hackness, d. ca. 1677, md Elizabeth Beverley [1], who d. 1679/80.

Edward Consitt, of Bickley, d. 1741, m. 25 June 1695, Ebberston, co. York, Isabella Beverley*.

Thomas Consitt, of Bickley, co. York, bp. 23 Nov 1708, Ebberston, bur. 27 July 1783, Ebberston, perhaps m. Mary Esthill [2].

William Consitt, of Broxa and Market Weighton, co. York, bp. 4 Oct 1748, Ebberston, bur. 28 May 1813, Market Weighton, m. 12 Apr 1773, Harwood Dale, co. York, Mary Dickinson*.

Thomas Consitt, of Market Weighton, bp. 11 Feb 1774, Harwood Dale, co. York, bur. 17 Sep 1838, Market Weighton, m. 9 Aug 1803, Hackness, Rebecca Rhodes [3], bp. 16 Apr 1780, Hackness, bur. 17 Oct 1845, Market Weighton.

Dorothy Ann Consitt, d. 25 Feb 1862, bur. Scotch Ridge cem., Warren co., IA, m. 2 Dec 1827, Market Weighton, co. York, England, Henry Cartwright*.

Notes: [1] The parentage of Elizabeth Beverley is unknown, but she was the sister of Arthur Beverley, the father of Isabella Beverley who m. Edward Consitt. [2] Because of the possibility of confusing two Thomas Consitts, the marriage(s) of Thomas Consitt have not been completely worked out. That Mary Esthill was one of his wives, and the mother of his children, seems to be the most likely possibility, but that is not certain. [3] Due to the fact that the baptism of Dorothy Ann Consitt has not yet been found, it is still uncertain whether Doroty was the daughter of Rebecca or of an unknown earlier wife of Thomas Consitt. If the ages of Dorothy (Consitt) Cartwright are correct as given on her gravestone and in two American censuses, then she was born ca. 1800, before the marriage of Thomas Consitt and Rebecca Rhodes. Some of the ancestors of Rebecca Rhodes are relatively easy to trace, but I have not included that data here, because of the uncertainties regarding the mother of Dorothy Ann Consitt.

COOK

Peter Cook, of Tarvin, co.Chester, England, d. 1713 at sea on the way to America, m. 7 12mo. [Feb] 1695/6, at Newton, co. Chester (recorded at Cheshire QM), Eleanor Norman*.

Note: [1] This date is based on a list of John Cook's children in the Gilbert Cope collection, written in Cope's handwriting. I have been unable to find the original source.

CRAVEN

John Craven, of Troutsdale, co. York, b. ca. 1581, d. 29 Sep 1661, bur. Hackness, co. York, m. 7 Dec 1607, Elizabeth Langdale*.

William Craven, of Hilla Green, co. York, bp. 11 Dec 1608, Wykeham, co. York, d. 1674, m. 12 July 1636, Brompton by Sawdon, co. York, Elizabeth Carlill*.

CRAWFORD (1)

James Crawford [1], of Ballysavage, co. Antrim, Ireland, will dated 19 June 1736, m. Margaret Agnew*.

John Crawford, of Raloo, co. Antrim, Ireland, d. in or bef. 1792, m. 21 Aug 1746, Larne, co. Antrim, Ireland, Jane Lyle.

Matthew Crawford, of Raloo, co. Antrim, Ireland, b. ca. 1760, d. 24 May 1814, bur. Raloo Graveyard, m. Jennet Crawford*.

John Crawford, b. 5 Dec 1791, Raloo, co. Antrim, Ireland, to America in 1818, d. 11 Sep 1860, Van Buren co., IA, bur. Winchester cem, m. 1st, Ireland, _____ Robinson [2] (first name unknown), who d. ca. 1830, OH. John Crawford m. 2nd, Rebecca Stull.

Nancy Crawford, b. 28 June 1823, OH, d. 7 Sep 1882, St. Charles, Madison co., OH, m. 15 Mar 1849, Guernsey co., OH, John W. Baird*.

Notes: [1] The parentage of John Crawford given here is probably correct, but further documentation is desirable, in order to be sure that individuals of the same name are not being confused. [2] Better documentation for this maiden name would be desirable, but it appears to be supported by the frequent use of "Robinson" as a middle or given name among descendants.

CRAWFORD (2)

Thomas Crawford [1], of Bogtown, in the Braid, co. Antrim, Ireland, m. Nancy Boyd.

Jennet Crawford, b. ca. 1762, d. 9 Dec 1845, bur. Raloo Graveyard, m. Matthew Crawford*.

Note: [1] No contemporary documentation has been found for this generation. The information comes from an early twentieth century typescript copy of an earlier document of unknown date, which appears to have been written by someone who personally knew both Nancy Boyd and Jennet Crawford. The same source gives the names of the parents of Nancy Boyd as William Boyd and Isabella Strackan, with no further information.

DEANE

Lawrence Deane, of Shurlach, co. Chester.

Richard Deane.

Lawrence Deane.

Alice Deane [1], of Shipbrooke, co. Chester, d. 9 Apr 1588, bur. 10 Apr 1588, Davenham, co. Chester, m. 20 June 1569, Davenham, Arthur Simcock*.

Note: [1] Alice (Deane) Simcock was the heiress of her granduncle John Deane (son of the elder Lawrence Deane), d. 13 Oct 1563, rector of the parish of St. Bartholomew the Great, West Smithfield, London, and founder of the grammar school at Witton, in Cheshire. Since the major documentation for this line comes through Alice Deane's status as the heiress of John Deane, virtually nothing is known of Alice Deane's three direct ancestors beyond their names.]

EDGE

George Edge [1], of Barrow, co. Chester, England, bur. 22 3mo. [May] 1676 at Whitley, co. Chester, m. Joan _____.

Sarah Edge [2], b. 7mo. [Sep] 1657, co. Chester, England, d. 26 2mo. [Apr] 1692, Chester MM, PA, m. 1686, Chester MM, PA, Thomas Bowater*.

[1] Some have given two additional generations, based primarily on the baptism of a certain George Edge, son of Richard Edge, at Frodsham. However, although it is possible that this baptism was the same George Edge, I have never seen any convincing proof that this was the case. [2] The frequently repeated claim that she was a daughter of the early Quaker immigrant John Edge is incorrect, and she was in fact John's sister. The above relationship is documented by the records of the Cheshire Quarterly Meeting. This Edge family apparently had no connection to the Edge family of Middlesex (also Quakers), with whom they have sometimes been confused.

Sarah Grimes, b. 11 June 1825, probably in Fayette co., PA, d. 1909, bur. Hale cem., Hardin co., OH, m. 18 Mar 1847, Logan co., OH, Lemuel Williams*.

HAYHURST (1)

Cuthbert Hayhurst or Hairst [1], of Essington, co. York, d. 19 1mo. [Mar] 1676/7, m. bef. 1617, Alice Hayhurst* or Hairst, d. 17 Jan 1667/8.

Isabell Hayhurst or Hairst, possibly the same as Isabell, bur. 17 Nov 1685, Twisden, co. Lancaster, England, m. John Scott*. [2]

Notes: [1] Most published accounts of the Hayhurst family appear to based on the innacurate account in the Alfred R. Justice collection, which makes the unlikely claim that Cuthbert Hairst of Essington was the same person as the Cuthbert, son of William Hairst of Slaidburn, whose will was dated 30 July 1647. Since William Hairst of Slaidburn had a minor child in 1647, and Cuthbert Hairst was already married by 1617, it is unlikely (but still possible) that William was Cuthbert's father. [2] It is certain that Cuthbert and Alice Hairst had a daughter named Isabell, who was named in the will of her maternal grandmother Margery Hairst (d. 1646/7, see below), and also known that there was a close relationship between the Scotts and the Hayhursts, based on the witness lists of several marriages, two of which have lists in which certain individuals are explicitly labelled as "relations". By far the best explanation for this relationship would be that John Scott's wife Isabell (maiden name otherwise unknown) was the same person as the Isabell who was daughter of Cuthbert and Alice Hairst, and other explanations would be difficult to fit into the known evidence. However, more direct evidence for this relationship would be desirable. See also the comments under Hayhurst (2) below.

HAYHURST (2)

William Hairst, of Newton-in-Bolland, co. York, England, d. 1584/6.

Cuthbert Hairst, of Newton-in-Bolland, co. York, d. 1622/3, m. Isabell (Rangill?).

William Hairst [1], of Newton-in-Bolland, d. 1617/8, m. Margery _____, d. 1646/7.

Alice Hayhurst or Hairst, d. 17 11mo. [Jan] 1667/8, Settle MM, co. York, m. bef. 1617 Cuthbert Hayhurst or Hairst*. [2]

Notes: [1] Cuthbert Hairst (d. 1622/3) certainly had a son named William, who was named executor of the will of his grandfather William Hairst (d. 1584/6). It seems likely that Cuthbert Hairst's son William was the William Hairst of Newton-in-Bolland whose will was written in 1617, and who was the father of Alice, the wife of Cuthbert Hairst/Hayhurst of Essington, but better evidence of that identity is still needed. The maiden name and parentage of Alice appears to have been overlooked by previous researchers. [2] In addition to being the parents of a daughter Isabell (see above), they were the parents of Cuthbert and William Hayhurst, two early Quaker immigrants to PA.

HOUSTON {probable connection [1])

William Houston, of Craig, co. Antrim, Ireland, will dated 3 Apr 1685, proved 21 May 1685.

Martha Houston, m. Patrick Agnew*.

Note: [1] The information given here is all well documented. The family is listed here as "probable" because of a weak link (two generations later) between these individuals and myself.

HUETT/HEWITT

JARMAN

John Jarman, m. Margaret _____.

Elizabeth Jarman [1], probably m. Edward Morgan*.

Note: [1] Although Edward Morgan's wife Elizabeth was probably the daughter of John Jarman, this has not been solidly documented. The principal evidence comes from an account given by an aged great-granddaughter of Edward Morgan to a younger relative, which was then reported soon afterward by the latter in a letter. There are also several pieces of primary evidence which lend support to, but do not confirm, the relationship.

LLOYD (probable connection [1])

Thomas Lloyd [2], d. 1748, Philadelphia co., PA, m. bef. 10 6mo. [Aug] 1699, PA, Elizabeth Williams*.

Sarah Lloyd, b. 14 7mo. 1701, Haverford MM, PA, d. bef. 6 Aug 1747, Frederick co., VA, m. 8 Nov 1721, Haverford MM, PA, John Morgan*.

Notes: [1] The information given here is all well documented. The family is listed here as "probable" because of a weak link (one generation later) between these individuals and myself. [2] The claimed royal ancestry of Thomas Lloyd has been disproven. See my article "The supposed royal ancestry of the Lloyd siblings of Pennsylvania", in The American Genealogist 71 (1996): 77-84, where I showed that the previously claimed parentage of Thomas Lloyd was incorrect. The parentage, and place of origin overseas, of Thomas Lloyd remains unproven, although it is very likely that he came from Wales.

MARIS

George Maris [1], of Grafton Flyford, co. Worcester, England, d. 1656/9, m. 20 June 1622, Bradley, co. Worcester, Alice Collier*.

George Maris, b. ca. 1631/2, co. Worcester, d. 15 11mo. [Jan] 1703/4, Chester MM, PA, m. Alice _____ [2], who d. 11 1mo. [Mar] 1699/1700, Chester MM, PA.

Alice Maris, b. 17 8mo. [Oct[ 1660, co. Worcester, England, d. 10 10mo. [Dec] 1726, Chester MM, PA, m. 15 11mo. [Jan] 1684/5, Chester MM, PA, Jacob Simcock*.

Notes: [1] His father is sometimes given as Richard Maris, but there are problems with the documentation (because of possible confusion with another George Maris), and the parentage of this George Maris still requires proof. The documentation for the English ancestry of this family is discussed in detail in my article "George1 Maris of Chester County, Pennsylvania", in The Genealogist 13 (1999): 216-51. [2] To my knowledge, no good evidence has ever been put forward to support the claimed maiden name of "Willsmith" (or variants) for Alice.

MILLER

Gayen Miller, d. 1742, Chester co., PA, m. Margaret _____. [1]

Sarah Miller, b. 1 9mo. [Nov] 1704, Newark (Kennett) MM, PA, d. 6mo. [Aug] 1749, bur. London Grove, Chester co., PA, m. 23 Apr 1724, Newark (Kennett) MM, PA, Joshua Johnson*.

Note: [1] The maiden name of Margaret is given as "Henderson" in some sources, but I have never seen any proof of this.

MOON

James Moon, d. ca. 7mo. [Sep] 1713, Falls MM, PA, m. Joan _____, who was b. ca. 1649, d. 10mo. [Dec] 1739, Falls MM, PA[1].

James Moon, b. ca. 1669, m. 1st, 2mo. [Apr] or 3mo. [May] 1697, Chesterfield MM, NJ, Mary Wilsford*. James Moon m. 2nd, 1714, Agnes Priestly.

Simon Moon, b. 11 4mo. [June] 1700, Middletown MM, PA, will dated 11 Nov 1748, proved 7 Feb 1748/9, Frederick co., VA, m. 27 Sep 1721, Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA, Leaury Humphries.

Rachel Moon, m. 12 7mo. [July] 1758, New Garden MM, NC, Henry Thornburgh*.

Notes: [1] I have been unable to find any good evidence that Joan's maiden name was Burges(s), as has been frequently claimed, nor have I found any proof that James Moon was the brother of John Moon, another early Quaker immigrant from Bristol to PA. The supposed Bristol origin of James is also, to my knowledge, unproven.

MORE

John More, m. Rose Brace*.

John More, m. Joan Gardner.

Isabell More, bur. 30 Mar 1545, St. Peter de Witton, Droitwich, co. Worcester, m. John Wythe*.

MORGAN (probable connection)

Edward Morgan [1], of Gwynedd, PA, maternal grandfather of the famous Daniel Boone, m. Elizabeth (probably Jarman*).

John Morgan, d. ca. 1747, Frederick co., VA, m. 8 Nov 1721, Haverford MM, PA, Sarah Lloyd*.

Elizabeth Morgan, probably the same person as: Elizabeth, d. 19 9mo. [Sep] 1773, New Garden MM, NC, m. ca. 1745, probably in VA, William Baldwin*.

Notes: [1] Edward Morgan's origin is unknown. He was certainly not the son of Sir James Morgan (of the Morgans of Llantarnum), as has been frequently claimed. An extensive account of the immediate descendants of Edward Morgan is currecntly in preparation. [2] The suggested identity of Elizabeth, daughter of John Morgan, with Elizabeth, wife of William Baldwin, is based on a number of independent pieces of evidence, which form a strong case, but fall short of clear proof.

NORMAN

John Norman, of Crowton, Cheshire, England, d. ca. 1680, m. 6 Sep 1654, Frodsham, co. Chester, Margaret Rutter. [1]

Eleanor Norman, of Kingsley, perhaps bp. 21 Sep 1665, Frodsham, m. 7 Feb 1695/6, Cheshire, m. 1st, 7 12mo. 1695/6, England, Peter Cook*, of Tarvin, Cheshire, who d. 1713 at sea on the way to America. She m. 2nd, 1714, Chester MM, PA, John Fincher.

Note: [1] This seems to be the most likely possibility for the parentage of Eleanor Norman, but further proof is needed.

PARKER

Arthur Parker, of Lickhurst, in Bolland Forest, co. Lancaster, England, b. ca. 1536, d. July 1602, m. Elizabeth _____, will dated 9 Jan 1608/9.

Alexander Parker, of Lees in Bolland Forest, bp. 22 Aug 1565.

Robert Parker, of Lees in Bolland Forest, will dated 8 Jan 1671, m. Jane _____.

William Paxson, b. 25 Dec 1675, bp. 22 Jan 1675/6, Marsh Gibbon, bo. Buckingham, England, m. 20 12mo. [Feb] 1695/6, Middletwon MM, PA, Abigail Pownall*.

Reuben Paxson [2], m. 1730, Abington MM, PA, Alice Simcock*.

John Paxson, b. 13 7mo. [Sep] 1744, Kingwood, Hunterdon co., NJ, d. 1820, Logan co., OH, m. Mary _____[3].

Nancy Paxson, d. 1838, m. 8 Sep 1812, Champaign co., OH, Henry Williams*.

Notes: [1] Martha Jonet Paxson Grundy, "The Paxson Brothers of Colonial Pennsylvania: The First Three Generations", in National Genealogical Society Quarterly [NGSQ] 71 (1983), 193-216, based primarily on Arthur Edwin Bye, History of the Bye Family and Some Allied Families (Easton, PA, 1956), claimed to give four additional generations of ancestry for this Paxson family. However, see my article "The Paxson Brothers of Pennsylvania: A Reassessment of the Evidence", in NGSQ 83 (1995), 39-43, where I showed that these generations could not be accepted without further proof. [2] Although his genealogical connections are well documented, the birth and death dates of Reuben Paxson are unknown. I have been unable to verify reports that he married agan and moved to South Carolina. [3] An undocumented maiden name of "Simcock" for her started appearing on the internet in 1998. Unless supporting evidence for this surfaces, it seems best to regard this as a probable error resulting from confusion with John Paxson's mother, who certainly was a Simcock.

POWNALL

Ralph Pownall, of Witton, Cheshire, d. between 1604 and 1607, m. 1st, Margaret _____, who was bur. 15 Jan 1587/8, Witton, m. 2nd., Anne _____.

George Pownall, of Lostock Gralam, later of Bucks co., PA, bp. 26 Feb 1633/4, Witton, d. 30 Oct 1682, Bucks co., PA, m. Eleanor (probably Worrall or Gardner [1]).

Abigail Pownall, b. 4 12mo. [Feb] 1677/8, Cheshire, England, d. 1749, Bucks co., PA, m. William Paxson*.

Note: [1] The reasons for regarding Eleanor's maiden name to be probably Worrall or Gardner were discussed in my article Quaker Marriage Certificates: Using Witness Lists in Genealogical Research, The American Genealogist 72 (1997), 225-243, especially 237-242.

Note: [1] I have been unable to verify the statement in Torrey's marriages that his wife's name was Priscilla Wakeman.

Sarah Richardson, b. 28 Apr 1710, Waterbury, CT, d. 15 Feb 1747/8, Waterbury, CT, m. Samuel Weed*.

Note: [1] I have been unable to verify the statement in Torrey's marriages that her maiden name was Senior.

RIVES

Capt. Frederick Rives [1], d. bef. 19 Jan 1815, Franklin co., VA, m. 1761, Amelia co., VA Mary Magdalene Stegall*.

Phoebe S. Rives, b. 3 Sep 1769, VA, d. 30 Jan 1854, Washington co., IN, m. 23 July 1796, Franklin co., VA, Murphy D. Still*.

Note: [1] The supposed ancestors of Captain Frederick Rives which are given in Reliques of the Rives, by James Rives Childs, are supplied without any reasonable proof, and cannot be accepted without further evidence.

ROBINSON

Notes: [1] His place of origin in England is unknown. Claims that he was born in Northamtonshire or Yorkshire have not been backed up by good evidence. [2] Maiden names of Messor, Meeker, and variants have been assigned to her, but with no known good evidence. [3] The claim that her maiden name was Wiseman is probably a mistake based on the confusion of two Nathaniel Weeds, as her son Nathaniel Jr. was married to a Wiseman. The fact that two of her sons had "Cooper" as a middle name (a feature which does not appear in earlier generations) suggests the possibility that her maiden name may have been Cooper. [4] The "e" appears to have been added to the name at about this generation.

Mary Jane Williams, b. 17 Sep 1857, Hardin co., OH, d. 29 May, Waldo, Marion co., OH, m. 18 Nov 1880, Hardin co., OH, Enos David Baldwin*.

Note: [1] The evidence for this first generation depends heavily on two noncontemporary county histories which tell a consistent story, and which appear to be independent of each other, with a little support from good primary sources. However, it would be nice to get better documetation for this generation.

WILLIAMS (2)

George Williams, of Monocacy, Prince Georges co., m.

"WILLIAMS" (3) (probable connection [1])

John [2]

Edward ap John, of Cynlas, in the parish of Llanderfel, co. Merioneth, Wales.

William ap Edward, of Merion, PA, will dated 29 Dec 1714, m. ca. 1671, Wales, Katherine Roberts [3].

Elizabeth Williams, b. 14 May 1672, Wales, d. 1748/9, Philadelphia, PA, m. bef. 10 6mo. [Aug] 1699, PA, Thomas Lloyd*.

Notes: [1] The information given here is all well documented. The family is listed here as "probable" because of a weak link (two generations later) between these individuals and myself. The surname "Williams" is valid here only for the last generation. [2] His first name can be deduced from his father's patronymic, but nothing else about him is certain. I have been unable to find proof that his full name was John ap Edward, as claimed by Glenn in Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania. Of course, that also means that Glenn's suggested royal descent which goes along with that claim has not been sufficiently documented. [3] I have found no good reason to believe that she was the sister of the immigrant Hugh Roberts, as Glenn claims in Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania.
