The following chart of three generations of descendants of Edward Morgan of Gwynedd (maternal grandfather of the famous Daniel Boone) is a minor revision of a chart that was compiled by me in April, 1995, and later distributed to a number of places, including the Morgan and Quaker mailing lists at Rootsweb. I became interested in the family in the early 1990's when I discovered that my ancestor Elizabeth, wife of William Baldwin of Guilford county, North Carolina, was probably a member of this family. (Unfortunately, that is one thing that has not changed. Although the case in favor of Elizabeth being a granddaughter of Edward Morgan is a strong one, it still falls short of outright proof.) When I started looking into the family, I discovered that much of the data which was available on the family was either undocumented or incorrect. Thus, I took on the project of checking the various claims carefully against the primary sources, in order to find out which of the commonly repeated claims were true or false. As expected, some of the claims turned out to be false. Most notably, there was the extremely suspicious claim that the immigrant Edward Morgan was the son of Sir James Morgan of the Morgan's of Llantarnum in Wales, and it was not surprising that a close examination of the evidence proved this claim to be completely false. (Edward Morgan's parentage remains unproven.) However, in addition to disproving the status of some of the claimed descendants of Edward Morgan, a previously unknown daughter (Mary) of Edward Morgan with a large family of her own was discovered, replacing disproved descendants by newly discovered ones. The same evidence that established this new daughter also pointed to the probable parentage of Elizabeth, wife of Edward Morgan, who appears to have been the daughter of John Jarman, another early Quaker immigrant to Pennsylvania, although this remains unproven. (Without offering any evidence, some accounts have given this surname to Margaret, wife of Edward Morgan Jr. However, since Edward Sr. has sometimes been confused with his son Edward Jr., who predeceased his father, assigning the surname of Jarman to Margaret appears to be a result of the same confusion.)
Since my own research in the primary records sometimes differed considerably from what had appeared elsewhere, I decided to distribute a preliminary genealogical table of my findings, including only those individuals for whom I could find proof, or at least enough supporting evidence to regard as probable (clearly identified as such), and leaving out all individuals for whom I had no supporting evidence. Now, a few years later, after others have had the chance to offer any additional evidence that might be available, the table is essentially the same as it was then, only a couple of minor changes having been found necessary. The article which gives the full details of the documentation will be serialized in The Genealogist (probably starting in 2001).
Although the table will probably be understandable in most fonts, it is probably best viewed in a fixed-width font. I have tried to make it narrow enough that it will display OK on most screens, but I cannot guarantee that the table will be readable on all browsers. If there is a problem viewing the table, it is probably because the line length is too short. In that case, copying it into a word processor and making the line length long enough might solve the problem. I would appreciate being informed of any errors.
